Citizenship through Naturalization

Citizenship through Naturalization is Suitable For:

• Foreign nationals who satisfy all the conditions outlined below:
  
  
  • They are of age, in other words 18 or above
    
    Note: If they are under 18, they are deemed to be of age if they are married or have been married
    
    
  • They have been a legal resident in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba for five years or more
    
    
  • They have an entitlement to residence on the basis of which they are allowed to stay on the Netherlands Antilles for an indefinite period of time, or a residence permit for temporary residence for a non-temporary purpose, such as family reunification or paid employment
    
    
  • They are sufficiently integrated and they can speak, read, write and understand the Dutch language or Papiamento
    
    Note: Residents of St. Maarten, St. Eustatius or Saba if they can speak, read, write and understand English
    
    
  • They have not received a prison sentence, training order, community service or large fine during the past four years
    
    
  • They are willing to relinquish the current nationality
    
    Note: If they do not relinquish their current nationality when they become a Dutch national, Dutch citizenship can be withdrawn once0 again. There are, however, a number of exceptions to this rule

Notes

• If you are married to, or the registered partner of, a Dutch man or woman, you can submit an application for naturalization after 3 years of marriage or registered partnership (possibly outside the Netherlands) and cohabitation
  
  Note: You can also submit an application if you have been living continuously for 3 years with a Dutch man or woman and neither of you is married
  
  
• If you are a former Dutch national, it is not essential to have resided for a specific period in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba. In certain instances, you can use the option procedure. Apply for Dutch Citizenship through Option Procedure
  
  
• If you have a temporary residence permit with a purpose of a temporary nature - for example, for study or medical treatment - you cannot be naturalized
